Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Many people incorrectly assume that dental insurance is virtually identical to traditional medical insurance, but this isn’t actually the case. Medical insurance is designed to cover the cost of big emergencies, such as injuries, illnesses, and significant life events like pregnancy. On the other hand, dental insurance emphasizes prevention above all else, which is why essential services like biannual dental checkups and cleanings are usually covered at 100%. The goal is to help you cover the cost of these routine visits so that any potentially worrisome symptoms are caught by your dentist at the earliest possible opportunity, potentially saving you a great deal of money later down the road.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Every dental insurance plan is a little different, which is why we urge you to confirm available benefits with your provider first before committing to treatment. Our Crystal River team can also help with this process, so just ask! However, most companies do provide coverage that falls somewhere along the following lines:

  • Preventive care like dental checkups, professional cleanings, and fluoride treatment (for patients under the age of 18) are covered at 100% up to twice each calendar year.
  • Minor restorative care (which can include tooth-colored fillings and root canal therapy) is likely covered at around 70-80%.
  • Major restorative care (which can include dentures, bridges, crowns, and more) is likely covered at around 50%.

Cosmetic services virtually never receive coverage under dental insurance.

Our In-Network PPO Dental Insurance Providers

So now you know more about what to expect when trying to use dental insurance benefits for common services – but what does it mean to visit an “in-network” dentist VS an “out of network” dentist? Simply put, in-network dentists have agreed to accept pre-negotiated rates for covered services instead of charging their own prices – as a result, the patient is likely to pay less. However, keep in mind that in many cases, the differences between “in-network” and “out of network” rates are very minor, which is why it’s worth exploring your options at out of network dentists too!

At Signature Dental Care, we are an in-network provider with Florida Blue and accept out of network benefits through filed claims for other major PPO plans. Please contact us today if you have further questions or would like to schedule an appointment!
